Fargo

Truthfully, I was expecting a little more out of Fargo. Reviews I’ve read made me anticipate a more compelling movie, but instead, I came out feeling shortchanged.

Don’t get me wrong, Fargo is a good movie. I love the characters that play out the story as much as I love the story that the Coen brothers are telling. I just feel that it lacks that needed oomph to separate it from merely being good to being great.

Attempts at humor through dialogue actually came out more annoying than funny. And perhaps 1996 was a weak year in film, but I didn’t feel that Frances McNormand’s performace was worthy of a best actress performance.

Finally, all throughout the film, it irritated me that the lingering thought in my mind was ‘where have I seen Peter Stormare before?’ (It was in Prison Break, where he played John Abruzzi.)

I think my viewing of Fargo was a classical case of a failure to meet exceedingly high expectations. I probably would’ve enjoyed this film more if I shunned Rotten Tomatoes to begin with.
