On recommending great films
Dad came into my room this afternoon and raided my DVD stack. Apparently, he was looking for something to occupy him this relatively slow holiday.
Dad: Chinatown, is this a good film? Jack Nicholson stars. This should be good.
Me (knowing my dad’s tastes in film): Umm, that one’s kinda old. 1975, so you probably won’t like it.
Dad: I’ll watch it anyway. How about this one? (referring to Scarface.) Al Pacino. He’s a great actor.
Me: Umm… why don’t you take it and see.
Anyway, great as they may be, it’s just hard to recommend films that you know the other person won’t enjoy. While both good films, I’m willing to bet that dad won’t be able to sit through these.
