LCDing

Then it’s the memory of our betters
That are keeping us on our feet

- All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem

Spent the past three days tripping out on LCD Soundsystem’s Sound of Silver. Judging from their eponymous album released two years ago (which I didn’t like), I rather unfairly bunched this album together with Liars, M.I.A., and other rap-slash-electronic acts that I don’t get why indie-hipster kids love.

Instead, what I discovered was a startlingly great record, one that has the ability to blur the lines of separation across genres. While most dance acts crossing over are electronic first and rock second, this album has more of a rock concoction, which is something that I find a little more pleasant.

My favorite song on the album, All My Friends, for lack of better words, is a fuckin’ masterpiece.

(Yeah, so Nancy Whang is hot. Damn! Anyway…)

The song starts off with jangling piano chords in a seemingly imperfect rhythm that signals the beginning of a tumultuous tale. The emotions channel from tribute and appreciation, to breakdown and regret, before coming full circle and longing for his friends again, perhaps seeking for forgiveness for the things he wronged them with.

What is so great is that, to me, it represents the natural cycle of growing old and how it has the uncanny ability to manifest years of emotions in a mere 7 minutes.

To end, I’m putting up a picture of Nancy Whang doing her thing. Just because.

  2. the first song i heard from this album was north american scum before i dismissed the entire record. now, after a few listens, i can say it has grown on me already. i just skip track number 1 and listen to it all the way til the end.
