Mistaken for strangers

I know I’m probably way late to the party, but I am really digging the National. I didn’t get into them when they released Boxer last year as it reminded me so much of a Johnny Cash sensibility, which didn’t bode that well with me. But I must admit, their music is really the type that needs sustained listens for it to grow on you, and once it does, we have a winner.

I remember, I was on one of those emo conversations with a friend two weeks back, with their third album Alligator playing on the background, when the song Baby, We’ll Be Fine popped up. Oh good lord, how apropos!

“Just say something perfect, something I can steal
Say, look at me
Baby, we’ll be fine
All we’ve gotta do is be brave and be kind”

- Baby, We’ll Be Fine by the National

On occasion, I put whatever I am listening to on iTunes as my YM status message as an obligatory exercise in self-gratification. Anyway, while listening to Band of Horses this afternoon, this conversation happened.

J: I didn’t know Detlef Schrempf sings??!?!
B: Nyek haha.
J: I thought he’s only good in the basketball court!
B: Its the song title.
J: hahahaha
J: ooooooohhhhh
J: OHHHH
J: So the singer…
B: is Band of Horses.
J: Band of Horses!
J: I thought it’s the other way around.
J: Anyway, don’t mind me. I was just surprised with his supposed career switch.
J: hahaha

Don’t worry. To be female and have any semblance of who Detlef Schrempf is, plus the fact that you’re catching the Foo Fighters in Toronto, makes you cool in my book.

  1. Re: The National, high five! Also, I also think they’re good for continuous listening. That’s why I really like their NPR concert.

  2. So, am I right to assume that if the National is coming to Singapore, then we’re there? Maybe it’s wishful thinking but a gut feeling tells me that it’s gonna be either the National or Arcade Fire for next year’s Mosaic.

Speaking of Mosaic, 3 weeks nalang, BSS na! woohoo!
