Lightspeed Champion

It took a whole lot of courage on my part to try and sample the music of Lightspeed Champion. Because honestly, would you trust a guy to deliver good music if he looks like this?

Lightspeed Champion

But as I always say, things don’t turn out exactly the way you expect them to be, and Lightspeed Champion is no exception. His debut Falling Off the Lavender Bridge, is a wonderful collection of lush and heartfelt pop songs rendered mostly on acoustic guitar that has the makings of a record that I am sure to enjoy for a long time.

My favorite song in the album, Midnight Surprise, is a ten minute monster of a track that skillfully weaves chapters through brilliant musical interplay, before concluding with a Sufjan Stevens-esque orchastraic opus.

Anyway, here is a video Lightspeed Champion performing Tell Me What’s It Worth at the back of a London cab for the Black Cab Sessions.

  1. Stumbled upon your blog when I was surfing about Broken Social Scene and Aia. Hmmm I loved Lavender Bridge the first few listens but in my opinion it kinda lost its lustre after the 5th rotation. I was supposed to go his free show at the Horseshoe Tavern here in Toronto but I was starting a fever and it was snowing like crazy… my friends said it was pretty good though. Have you heard of Cass McCombs? He’s also under Domino but I like his stuff better than Dev’s.

  2. I’m past my tenth listen on Lavender Bridge and while it hasn’t grown enough for me to be promoted to classic status, I still think it’s a pretty solid album. I’ve seen about half of his performance for NPR with only him and a violinist. It wasn’t mind blowing, but it was ok.

Haven’t heard of Cass McCombs. Will try it out when I do find the time.
